Cocktail Time – Are You Ready for a Mudslide?

If you’ve spent much time at block Island, there’s a good chance you’ve been tempted to enjoy a Mudslide. So, I thought it was worth it to do some research.  From what I can find, there are two main variations on the recipe.  Basically, both recipes include vodka, coffee liqueur, and irish cream liqueur. The thing that varies is the source of creaminess.  Some recipes use ice and cream or milk.  Other recipes use vanilla ice cream.  Some recipes even […]

Recommendations for 24 Hour Watch Schedules

Last weekend took me to Newport to bring a boat back to Annapolis.  At this time of year, there are a lot of distance races and deliveries to and from Annapolis.  So, I thought it was worth taking a minute to share some experiences. This is my third delivery in three years (Bermuda, Charleston, and Newport all back to Annapolis).  One thing I’ve learned is that there is not one RIGHT watch system.  It is dependent on aspects like: […]

What’s That Glowing in the Water?

As it got dark during the night race to Solomon’s Island, I started to notice a lot of bioluminescence in the water.  This doesn’t happen all the time; but when it does, it’s really neat to see.  At first, it looks like a flash.  I usually have to ask myself whether I really saw something or not.  Then, I see it again and realize I’m not making this up.   Bioluminescence is when a living organism emits light.   You […]

Stay Hydrated & Keep Your Drink Cold

I write this post in the spirit of the warm sunny weekend weather.  Whatever your drink of choice, it’s SO important to stay hydrated.  Its even more enjoyable when your drink stays cold on a hot day.   I have a bunch of water bottles — the Sigg metal ones and the plastic ones.  However, I started looking for a bottle where the drinking surface is covered by an additional lid.  This is actually driven by some kayaking that I’ve […]

The Miracles of a Laser (& I’m Not Actually Talking About the Boat Here)

OK — admittedly, this is kind of a weird post for a sailing blog.  What I’m actually talking about here is laser hair removal.  My skin is really fair and my hair is dark brown.  So, I always felt like I had obvious stubble in my underarm area. That made me really self conscious wearing any kind of a tank top or sleeveless shirt — especially when I had to lift my arms over my head to jump a sail, […]

Favorite Flip Flops

Let’s talk about flip flops : ) For at least six months out of the year, I spend most of my time in flip flops when I’m not wearing racing shoes.  So, in my mind, it’s really important to have good flip flops.  And, I might suggest having more than just ONE pair — just a suggestion 😉 .  For a long time, I wore Reef flip flops and loved them.  They are comfortable, inexpensive, and the foam footbed molds […]

Your Cocktail for the Weekend — Dark & Stormy

The Dark & Stormy became popular in many areas of the British Commonwealth.  Sailors have then spread the popularity if the drink throughout the sailing community.  A Dark & Stormy is basically dark rum mixed with ginger beer.  Different parts of the world use different types of ginger beer or different brands of rum.   To make a Dark & Stormy, mix the following and drink over ice: 2 oz. Dark Rum (I like Goslings) 8 oz. Ginger Beer (I […]

The Bushwhacker -Your Cocktail for the Weekend

I was first introduced to the Bushwhacker during a New Year’s Eve vacation in St. Thomas.  Here’s a warning — this is a heavy drink.  But, if you like milk shakes and you have a sweet tooth, you will love the Bushwhacker.   It sounds like this drink originated in St. Thomas.  However, in 1975 the Sandshaker in Pensacola, FL started serving a version to their customers and it became hugely popular.   Here’s a recipe if you want to […]

It’s that time of year again…

WARNING…..WARNING…..this may be a soap box post!   We’re all here because we love to sail – right?  That’s definitely my case; and I want to spend as much time out on the water as possible.  It’s even better if the sailing is on a warm sunny breezy day.  However, I’m also REALLY fair skinned with a lot of freckles.   So, I make sure that I go to the dermatologist once a year before sailing gets going to make […]

It’s Cocktail Time — Have a Painkiller!

There are two drinks that make me think of fun sunny days sailing — either at the dock after the race, at Pussers in Annapolis, the Soggy Dollar Bar in Jost Van Dyke, or during an island adventure in St. Thomas.  Those drinks are the Painkiller and the Bushwhacker.  Here’s the recipe for Pusser’s Painkiller, to get the weekend off to a tropical start.   4 Parts Pineapple Juice 1 Part Cream of Coconut 1 Part Orange Juice 2, 3, […]
