How to Tie a Clove Hitch

A clove hitch is a simple knot that can be used to secure fenders to a boat’s lifelines or to tie the boat off to a piling.  There are a few different ways to tie a clove hitch.  I’ve got information about some of them here.

First, I’ll share my example of tying the clove hitch step by step.  This is one way that I tie fenders to lifelines:

Esterle Clove Hitch 1

 Make a counterclockwise loop:

Esterle Clove Hitch 3
Cross the leading end of the line under as you make a second counterclockwise loop:

Pull the end of the line tight:

Here’s a video that demonstrates that same method:

Here’s a video of a different method to tie  the same clove hitch.  I like this one because it’s a simple way that I can remember to tie the boat to a piling:

You can also add a couple of half hitches to add security and make sure there’s no chance of the clove hitch slipping.  Here’s my version of how to add two half hitches to your clove hitch:

Make The following loop:
Esterle Half Hitch 1

Pull it tight — you have just completed your first half hitch:

Esterle Half Hitch 2

Repeat the steps above:

Once you pull the line tight, your clove hitch has been secured with two half hitches:

Here’s a separate video that will give you a different view of how to tie two half hitches:
